How does OnlyFans work? Creators put photos and videos behind a paywall, and fans pay to see them, either with a monthly subscription or one purchase at a time through paid posts, paid messages or tips. OnlyFans processes every payment, keeps 20% of it and credits the remaining 80% to the creator, who can withdraw the balance once it reaches the payout minimum.
This is OnlyFans explained for both sides, creators first, from how a page earns to the rules every account signs up to.
In short
- OnlyFans is a subscription platform for adults; fans and creators alike must be 18 or older.
- A page earns through subscriptions and pay-per-view content. Tips and custom requests come on top.
- OnlyFans keeps 20% of every fan payment, the creator keeps 80% and owns 100% of the content.
- Fans buy access to content for as long as their licence runs, never ownership of it.
What is OnlyFans?
OnlyFans is a subscription platform where creators sell access to their content and to direct conversations with them. According to OnlyFans' getting-started page, more than 3 million creators have used it. It is best known for adult content, although creators in other niches use it too.
Every account starts as a fan account, open only to users who are 18 or older. A creator account adds a valid ID, two photos of you and a payout method. Our guide on how to start OnlyFans covers the route from one to the other, with step-by-step guides on creating an OnlyFans account and OnlyFans verification.
Expect to bring most of your audience yourself. OnlyFans hosts the page and handles the money, while its Creator Center tells new creators to dedicate time to promoting their profile and calls cross-promotion on social media the first step. For a new page, our guide on where to promote OnlyFans ranks the channels by effort and return.
How does OnlyFans work for creators?
A creator picks the page model, sets the prices, then posts content and sells to fans in the feed or in the inbox. OnlyFans takes the payments and pays out. The cycle runs in five steps:
- Choose the page model. A paid page charges a monthly subscription. A free page charges nothing at the door and sells content one item at a time. The terms make the creator solely responsible for every price.
- Post to the feed. On a paid page, the feed sits behind the subscription. On a free page, single posts can carry their own price.
- Sell in the inbox. Paid messages and custom requests happen in direct messages, on both kinds of page.
- Deliver what was paid for. Once a fan's payment is confirmed, the terms oblige the creator to perform their part.
- Get paid. Each payment lands in the balance minus the platform fee, and can be withdrawn once the balance meets the minimum payout amount. Our guide on how OnlyFans pays creators covers the methods and the timing.
That is how OnlyFans works for creators on paper. In practice most of the hours go into step three. PPV and chatting bring in roughly ten times the revenue of subscriptions across our own roster, which makes the inbox the part that decides what a page earns.
The ways an OnlyFans page earns
An OnlyFans page earns from subscriptions and from one-off sales such as pay-per-view content or tips, and which of them it can use depends on whether the page is free or paid. The table follows the features per account type in the OnlyFans Creator Center, plus custom requests:
| Revenue source | How the fan pays | Paid page | Free page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly subscription | A recurring charge that renews automatically | Yes | Not available |
| PPV posts | One payment to open a post in the feed | No | Yes |
| PPV messages | One payment to open a message | Yes | Yes |
| PPV live streams | A ticket, priced from $5 | No | Once OnlyFans enables live streaming |
| Tips | A one-off amount the fan picks, on posts, messages, streams or the profile | Eligible from five posts | Eligible from five posts |
| Tip before messaging | The creator can require a tip before a fan sends a direct message | No | Yes |
| Custom requests | Agreed in the DMs, then sold as a paid message or a tip | Yes | Yes |
Neither model wins in general. A paid page earns from the first day a fan subscribes, and its income tends to be easier to forecast. A free page gains subscribers faster on average, according to the Creator Center, but every dollar has to come from individual sales. Our roster runs both free and paid profiles, chosen per creator. How does OnlyFans work for a page that wants both kinds of income? Our guide on how to make money on OnlyFans shows how the mix plays out over a month.
The 80/20 split in one table
OnlyFans keeps 20% of every fan payment, whatever the payment is for, and the creator keeps 80%. Under the OnlyFans Terms of Service, the fee is calculated on the total fan payment and deducted from each payment before it reaches the creator's balance. Where sales tax applies, it is added to the fan's price and sits outside the split.
| What the fan pays for | Fan payment | OnlyFans fee (20%) | Creator earnings (80%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly subscription | $10.00 | $2.00 | $8.00 |
| PPV message | $25.00 | $5.00 | $20.00 |
| Tip on a post | $50.00 | $10.00 | $40.00 |
| Custom request | $100.00 | $20.00 | $80.00 |
| One month of payments for a page | $10,000 | $2,000 | $8,000 |
The amounts are examples to show the arithmetic, not typical prices.
Two further deductions can come between the 80% and your bank. All payments and earnings are in USD, so your bank or e-wallet may charge for currency conversion. And if a fan successfully gets a payment refunded or charged back, OnlyFans may take your 80% share of it back. Tax comes on top and is your own responsibility. The full fee picture is in our guide to the OnlyFans percentage cut.
What a fan sees and what a creator controls
A fan sees what the creator has made available to them, and nothing more. How does OnlyFans work for the person paying? A subscription opens everything the creator shares with subscribers, while individually priced items open only once each one is bought. Before a fan can subscribe or buy, the terms require payment details on the account. A subscription renews automatically at the current rate until the fan switches off auto-renew or cancels. It also stops renewing if the payment is declined with no other method on file, if the creator raises the price, or if the fan closes the account. A fan who cancels keeps access until the end of the period already paid.
What the fan buys is a licence to view the content. The contract between fan and creator states that this licence gives no ownership rights. It ends on its own in several cases, for example when the subscription period ends or the creator deletes the content.
| What the fan gets | What the creator controls | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Prices in USD, plus sales tax where it applies | Every price, from the subscription to the tip menu |
| Access | All subscriber content for the paid period; priced items once bought | What goes in the feed, what is sold separately, and to whom |
| Renewal | Automatic until the fan turns it off or cancels | A price rise stops auto-renewal, so every fan decides again |
| Ownership | A licence to view, no ownership | 100% ownership of the content |
| Removal | Access ends when the content is deleted | Content, including PPV, can be removed at any time |
| Who runs the account | Accepts that third parties may help a creator operate it | Decides who helps and what access they get |
The same contract has every fan acknowledge that third parties may assist creators in operating their accounts and in their interactions with fans. A team working on a page is part of the model OnlyFans describes, as long as the account stays the creator's.
The rules every OnlyFans account signs up to
OnlyFans sets a short list of rules that no price, model or agency changes. How does OnlyFans work when one of them is broken? Under the terms, it can suspend or delete content or the account and hold back earnings while it reviews the facts.
- Age. Fans and creators must be 18 or older.
- Identity. A creator uploads a valid ID with two photos and adds a payout method. OnlyFans may ask for further checks at any time and runs regular selfie checks so that, in the Creator Center's words, profiles remain in the control of their verified creators.
- Other people in your content. Each one must be a creator you have tagged or an adult whose proof of identity and written consent you hold. Without the documents, OnlyFans may restrict the content or withhold earnings.
- Content rules. Everything you post has to fit the Terms of Service, including the Acceptable Use Policy that is part of them.
- Delivery. Once a fan's payment is confirmed, what was sold has to be delivered.
- Tax. Creators are responsible for their own tax affairs, and OnlyFans gives no tax advice.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Ask a tax advisor in your country how your earnings are taxed, and have a lawyer read any contract before you sign it. If a verification check stalls or a payout is held, our guide on how to contact OnlyFans support shows which channel to use.
Where an OnlyFans agency fits
An OnlyFans agency works inside the creator's account on the business side. The account and the money stay with the creator. An agency becomes useful when the inbox and the promotion outgrow your hours, usually on a page that already has fans. How does OnlyFans work once a team is involved? The split of roles looks like this:
| Stays with you | Can be handed to a team |
|---|---|
| Your ID verification and the regular selfie checks | Fan conversations, around the clock |
| Profile email, two-factor authentication, payout details | The content plan and posting schedule |
| Ownership of every piece of content | Promotion outside OnlyFans |
| Your limits on what you will and will not do | Pricing, PPV planning, reading the numbers |
An agency's share comes on top of the platform fee, so ask whether it is calculated on gross fan spending or on net earnings after the 20%. The same percentage costs noticeably more on gross. Our guide to OnlyFans management agencies covers what an agency does day to day and what it should cost.
How MAXMO works with OnlyFans creators
MAXMO Management was founded in 2020 in Berlin and works remotely, with 21 specialists looking after eight creators. Every creator has one fixed personal contact who stays. You grant us access yourself, in the way you choose. Your profile email and two-factor authentication stay with you alone, as do your payout details, and the content stays 100% yours. Our team chats with your fans around the clock in English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Japanese, so your fans get answers in their own language.
Our share is calculated on net revenue, after the 20% OnlyFans fee, and invoiced on the amount that actually reaches your account. Nothing is billed upfront. Every collaboration starts with a trial phase so both sides can see whether it fits, and you can leave with three days' notice. Across our eight creators, the creator average is $75,000 a month.
You can see what our five service areas cover and what changed for three creators we work with, or find shorter answers in the FAQ on our homepage. If your page is running and you want an honest view of what a team would change, tell us where you stand and we will reply within 48 hours.
